Ralph

Ralph
Mis en scene
I recently watched Ralph which is a short film which is set in France and is about a character called Ralph. The character Ralph is dressed in a shirt with a gold chain, grey trousers and white trainers. This shows the audience that he would be a chav from the UK and would most likely know French. The red shirt would be representing love as that is what he went there for and it’ll help him stand out among the many people as red is a very bright colour. He carries with him a large suitcase showing that he would plan to be in France for a long time. Later he shows a photo he has of him and a friend and from his tone of voice we can tell he wishes to have a relationship with this girl Claire and also explains the reasoning behind his large suitcase as he'd want to live with her. The large suitcase could also be a sign of how much he cares for her as well. Something Ralph carries with him throughout this is his notepad. This would symbolise his entire life as he makes notes on things he likes and when the French waitress go for it he draws it away showing that he doesn’t want her in his life at that point. Later on he does hand her the piece of paper showing his acceptance to her being in his life this is a defying moment as there are clear signs that the waitress is starting to like Ralph.
The waitress in this film has a slightly changing attitude and costume as the film progresses. It starts off with her wearing a tea towel and being aggressive towards Ralph. As it goes on she becomes more understanding of him and tries to help him how she can an example of this is when she tries to get him to stay when her father tries and move him away; originally she would of helped him however it’s clear that she has started to care for him as she tries to help him. The most notably pivotal moment with her is when she goes in to change and comes out dressed differently it shows the audience that she is removed of her ties shown by her tea towel and that she completely changed and accepting of Ralph. Her father at one point walks up the side of a road next to the table so that he’s higher. Doing this uses levels and having the father higher shows that he is going to be oppressive very shortly which he does by trying to throw out Ralph of his cafe. When Claire arrives she is in a white shirt and when Lorenzo does he’s also in a white shirt doing this will show that the two are in a relationship as they both are paired up by what they are wearing.
