'71 is an action film what has the themes of war, religion and survival from Yann Demange. It is set in 1971 in Belfast when the Catholic south and the protestant north are fighting. Gary Hook a brand new soldier is sent in and is abandoned he has to try and survive the night before he is killed by the Catholics. The film was released in 2014 and had received the best British independent film award for best director. It had been produced by Crab Apple films and Warp films. In the opening weekend the film had made $55,761 and has made $2,900,00 by the 3rd of May it had also a budget of $8,100,000. For this I shall be looking at misc en scene and editing.
Throughout the film there are mostly two different costumes. These are the army uniforms and casual clothes. The importance of these is that it'll show the difference between the two. One shows order and discipline while the other shows violence and anger. The one showing order is the army as they do not wish to be any violence meanwhile the everyone else in causal clothes seems to want it these being most of the Irish people and also being the undercover soldiers.
In one brief part there is a shot of apartment block. In this shot it's meant to be highlighting that there are some flats however also in the shot is a statue of the mother Mary. The mother Mary is more commonly used by Catholics than Protestants. This will be telling the audience that the block of flats are in the Catholic area what earlier we were told that is an IRA headquarters and will probably lead to them being killed.
In an earlier part of the film when it really begins we see Gary run into a small sort of toilet when he does it is mostly pitch black however there is a little bit of light. Assuming that the darkness is how likely Gary will die then the single strobe light should then represent the odds that he'll survive. It also could be showing foreshadowing that for the rest of the majority of the film he shall be covered in darkness.
Just earlier that the soldiers had been isolating a road so that there can be searches done. However while this is happening there are these women whoa are banging bin lids onto the floor. This causes lots of panic and to improve this there are quick cuts between Gary and everything happening. It's telling the audience that there is panic everywhere and that Gary is finding it hard to cope with it all.

Audience
Audience is a group of people or person who witnesses something. This can happen at any time it happens nearly all of the time. This however can be used for more profit gaining purposes. For this is I shall be looking at more profitable reasoning behind having an audience. To do this I shall explain some different theories. These are the Hypodermic Needle theory, Audience responses, User & gratification/ personal identity and Surveillance.
Hypodermic Needle Theory:
This is a theory where it says that the audience is an empty vessel and that the people creating what ever we are being an audience to need to fill our heads. This is simply saying that we have no actual knowledge and only the creators can help us.
Audience Responses:
There are three different types of responses these are Preferred reading what is where the audience is impressed by everything they see. Then there is Negational reading this is where the audience are impressed by some of the elements of the film and what it is offering. Lastly there is Opperstion reading this is where a person shall criticise most of the film by finding flaws in most of it.
User&Gratification/Personal Identity:
This is when the creators get the audience to view themselves. the point of this is to get the audience to think that they need the product they are selling. As it's meant to make you feel like that you want it, that you want to have it.
Surveillance:
This is how we get our news. This can be manipulated so that it convinces us to act in a particular way so that we buy what they want us to. This can also be used so that we think in a particular ways it'll change our actions what could possibly change our lifestyle.

John Q
This is a thriller type film. It has the theme of family, medicine and politics. It follows a man called John Q who has a wife and young son however the son grows ill and needs a heart transplant. Unfortunately his insurance won't cover and he needs to take drastic action to get his son the help he needs. So to get this help he decides to take hostages in the emergency room. For this is shall be looking at performance and the misc en scene.
At the very start of the film we see their car being towed away. This then lead to John starting to look for a new job. It becomes very clear that they don't have that much money to the audience. You can clearly see the stress on John's face as he looks for a second job which only strengthens this knowledge to the audience. When the son comes into the room you can see how much the two parents love their child as they fill with joy, telling the audience that they deeply love their child.
Shortly after that when the child is dropped of at school they both briefly talk to each other. The child says that they can have the money he had saved up. This clearly touches the father and that is obvious to the audience who are meant to be touched as well by this gesture. John clearly then goes to tell his son that doesn't have to and it's obvious as he changes the tone of voice that he is using at that point.

Winter's Bone
This is a drama. It has the themes of family, debt and survival. It follows the story Ree who is told that her dad has dropped bail meaning that his bond is due and unfortunately to back the bond he had put the house under it. It follows her try and track down her father so that he can go and take the punishment. For this I shall be looking at performance and misc en scene.
In one scene Ree is teaching her two siblings how to skin squirrel. In this they have three squirrel would be representing the fact they are still children and that they are weak they can have their skin ripped off. During this her brother doesn't wish to claw it's guts out and you can easily see the change of tone she has turnt from being their friend to being a teacher with a stricter tone of voice. Another change comes very soon as another person comes over and she turns from being friendly to being bland as she has started to talk about business.
At the end only the two younger children are given baby chicks. This is to show that they are still children while Ree who didn't get one is no longer a child but is now a woman. In addition it is also meant to show that they are able to look after themselves. However the smallest one Ashley gives Ree the chick meaning that Ree even if she wanted to still can't leave them behind and that her bond with them is far too strong.

Shrek 2
This is an animated comedy. It has fantasy, love and family themes. It is the sequel to the film Shrek this mainly will follow the title character who has gone with his wife to get his father in laws blessing. However he doesn't want him to be married to his daughter and tries to kill him while Shrek is trying to maintain his brand new marriage. For this is I shall be looking at editing and cinematography.
In one section Shrek and his friends go into the potion factory They go into one room and we have a low angle shot. The purpose of this is to emphasise the meaning behind how many potions there are and how large of a challenge it shall be. In later in the scene there is a high angle shot with Shrek in the light alone. This could be showing that he is being judged for what he is doing by a higher power such as God.
In another scene earlier in the film the king, queen Fiona and Shrek are having dinner. As the scene progresses the emotional limit keeps on increasing. At one point the camera turns into a bird's eye view what is turning, this is meant to be representing a mexican stand off between the king and Shrek. As the emotions run wild the editing shots change more and faster this is to show how out of control the dinner is going at that point.

Chitty Chitty Bang Bang
This is a family musical. It has themes of family, love and creation. It follows the story of the Potts family, Truly Scrumptious (Yes that's her name) and Chitty the car. It mainly starts when the king of Bulgaria sees the car and wants it so he tries to steal it but in the end kidnaps granddad Potts, so the family and Truly go to rescue him. For this I shall be mostly focusing on performance and misc en scene.
In one section where Granddad has been kidnapped he starts to sing the posh song as they go over the sea. As he does this his voice changes, the meaning of this is so that he feels posh. Apart from actually leaving his family he seizes the opportunity to enjoy himself and have "The posh life". Doing this shows the audience that he is happy to be gone and that he feels free. In addition it also is one of the most comical bits in the film.
In another scene granddad Potts had been tasked with making a car sail. For this he is sent into clearly a lab. We know this as there looks to be experiments consonantly going on in the room. In addition all of the people in there are wearing lab coats, something they also have is beards so when they say they have been there for such along time. During the song The Roses of Success we are clearly reminded that they are working on building a floating boat as they keep on grabbing sailing equipment.

Resservoir Dogs
This is a crime film directed by Quentin Tarantino. It has the themes of Trust, Violence and friendship. This is a film about a group of men who pull off a heist but it goes wrong. You never see the heist however you can picture it in your head by what they said. The story mostly focuses on Mr.Pink, Mr.White, Mr.Orange and Mr.Yellow. They assume that someone had been a rat as the police arrived too early. For this is shall look at the cinematography and misc en scene.
Near the start where Mr.White and Mr.Pink are talking to each other about the idea that there is a rat amoungst them. While they are discussing this in the background there are three pots of coloured powder. These are orange, pink and white. They are meant to be representing the three different people in the warehouse they are in. The white and pink ones are together while the orange one is by itself showing that Mr.Orange is the rat as he is not with them he is in fact with the police. This is hidden however the audience will of have known this already before he says.
In another part we see Mr.Orange's origin. This is to continue the trend already as they had done it earlier for other people. In one part of Mr.Orange's origin we have him rehearsing a story so that he'll be believed and be undercover. When he is rehearsing this we have a mid shot with very little backdrop meaning that he is having to live in very cramp conditions. This would be telling the audience that he may be doing this dangerous job so thatb he will be able to get out and into some better living space.

Battle Royale 2
This is a Japanese action film what is the sequel to the 2001 film Battle Royale. It has the themes of Family, Terrorism and War. This follows another unlucky class who are forced into the Battle Royale Act 2. This class are sent to an island were a known terrorist group called the Wild Seven are located who are survivors of previous Battle Royales. One of the members of this class is Shorio Kitano who is the daughter of Kitano from the previous film who was killed by the leader of the Wild Seven Nanahara. For this is I shall be looking at the editing and the cinematography.
Throughout the film shaky camera's are used. This would be to show the chaos that the students would of have been going through. Also there are many different effects used on there such as near the end when characters run up the light of the sun covers them creating a sense of unknowing meaning that the audience is wondering what had happened to them.
In another section where they run into a building and are overwhelmed low angle shots are used so that the audience can see there point of view and that they are being oppressed by the others. At the same time their necklaces start to beep meaning that they're close to die if the large amount of beeping noises didn't increase the tension enough the quick editing showing the the scared faces. All of this is telling the audience that everyone is panicking.

Battle Royale
This is an Japanese action film. It has the themes of love, politics and trust. It is based of a book of the same name, where a brand new government act where a class at random is selected and they must fight to the death until one is left however if there are more at the end of the three days everyone will die. It follows many of the different students involved and shows how each one had died, though it mostly follows Nanahara, Noriko and Kawada. in addition it focuses on Takako, Kazuo and Kitano-Sensi(Who is my favorite character). In this is I shall look at the performance elements and the Cinematography.
In one of the beginning scenes where the students are told what is happening they go through a mixture of emotions what are clearly shown. Anger is shown by some of them as they are outraged by the fact they must do this. Nanahara is clearly shown to be enraged by the death of Nobu. The reason that this happens is that we know that he is the closeest that Nanahara has had to a family and he is taken away form him in front of his eyes. To empise this the camera is having a mid shot of Nanahara so it can capture the shock on his face and that there is blood all over him. As the shots change so does his emotions. It then turns to a long shot where he is clearly sad even though we can't see his face we know this as he is crying out loud and to be in front of all his peers it must of been very saddening for him. After a short while he then clearly has a large amount of anger grow inside of him. The thing what pushes him is that Kitano asks him calmly with no simpithy if he is all right. we know he is angered by him screaming at Kitano and having to be forced to the ground.
While this scene goes on they are watching a video on what is happening. This is shot so that the entire TV screen fills the screen. It allows the audience feel like they are there with them creating a strong level of immersion. Immersion had been used often in this film for example at the beginning of the scene bright lights are shined into the audiences faces making them feel disorientated just like the students. This disorientation is a continuation of what had happened earlier as the camera is shot from a bird's eye view turning around so that the audience is confused but sees how many people are there.

CASE STUDY My Brother the devil (2012)
This is a British film what has the genre Social Realism from Sally El Hosaini. It explores the themes of Love, living with crime and family. It's set in the London area mostly an area filled with flats. The two main protagonists live in a Muslim household form Egypt and are both get involved in gang culture.
The performance in the film is good as you can clearly see the changes between the two main protagonists go through during the entire film. Not to mention the changes that the two brothers have them self. In one part of the film a friend of the brothers is murdered. You can clearly see the affect it has on the two in there different ways, the emotion they have put into their characters to create a realistic perception of who they are. Something the two do is stick money inside of their mum's purse the point of this is to show that they care for their family.
Different types of shots are used in the film. For example at the start a variety of shots are used. One of the brothers is practicing their boxing clearly. You would easily be able to see the large amount of effort that he is putting in thanks to them using a close up to see the sweat in his head. Mid shots also allow you to see where he is at that current point.
Many different props are used in the misc en scene. An example of this would be in one seen where one of the brothers sees the painter. In this part the painter grabs a bottle of water while naked showing that he has grown a sweat form having sex.
