Wasp and Soft comparison

Wasp and Soft comparison

Wasp and Soft are two very well made short films which are both set in London and are social realism films. The main characters from both of these stories are parents who do care for their children. Both of these families have their children threatened at the start and the parent protects them. They both show the theme of family in them by having a clear difference between grown up and child also the similarities between the child and parent. This is shown in Soft by both of them being attacked by the same person. This is shown in Wasp as the children and the mother have messy.

Sound is used in both of these films to represent different things in Soft the sound of the car alarm is used to show the panic of the father while the gang is outside. However in Wasp songs are used to show the current atmosphere. In Soft there’s allot of levelling and representing used for example when the guy in white is on the father’s car it’s showing that he’s dominating him. And that the son at one point looks higher than the father showing he’s got more courage than him.

However I didn’t see as much in Wasp apart from the wasp represents the family. This is done earlier as the wasp is in the apartment and wants to go out just like the mother. Later the wasp is seen in a bin looking for food just like the children at that point. In addition another difference between the two is that the family in Wasp doesn’t have as much money as the one in Soft.

This can be seen by the clothing they have as the father in Soft has a suit and car while the mother in Wasp at the start has to go out in her nightie what doesn’t look very clean. The family in Soft have a nice looking car while the mother in Wasp says that she has to get the bus. The father in Soft has a partner what we don’t see but he does have one. The mother in Wasp doesn’t as we here they are no longer together and is looking for a new partner in the form of Dave.

  1. GEorge you have correctly identified the genre and the themes, you have also described some of key comparisons and evidenced them well with examples. You have also offered a little context with the insinuation of social status. However you need to delve deeper with your analysis in order to find the meanings that are created using the micro features. Going forward you will need to discuss the elements used to create the films that you are describing i.e. the range of shots, sound, editing, mise-en-scene. What do you think that you could have added?
